Ah social media, where would we be without it?

No, really, what would we do with our time if we weren’t constantly checking our social media channels?

Find the cure for the common cold? Write the next Booker Prize winner? Perhaps, but it’s unlikely we’ll ever really know, as social media is such a dominant part of most of our lives now as to have become indispensable.

Almost half the population of the world is now online, while more than 2bn people in the global population – close to a third – have a social media account.

Facebook is still the dominant channel, boasting a truly incredible 1.5bn users, while Google-owned YouTube has 1bn.

Every other social network is really a minnow in comparison, although the rapid growth being experienced by Instagram and Snapchat make them the ones to watch.
