Publishing content in Social Media, Blogs and Websites is not as simple as people think. You have to put in practice some specific guidelines to make sure that the information has the impact we need, and it gets shares, likes and comments.

In the case of infographics, the content and visual ideas are the keys to success. Today, we’re going to list the nine steps you need to follow when creating an amazing infographic.

It all starts when we start researching for crude data. It’s all a mess, papers, case studies, PDF files and links here and there. Sometimes we do have a guide on what we want, and that gives us our argumentative line. When we have that, we’re probably going to need new sources and data. We’ll have a clear picture of our infographic when we have several sources, in groups, and organized.

1. Read, read and read some more

Even though it might seem tempting to read only about the important facts, and forget about everything else, the fact is that paying attention to the “important” facts only will make you waste a lot of time. You’ll end up searching for info to support those “important” facts after “finishing” the infographic. And don’t even think about not including it, your audience will notice!

 2. Find your storyline

A boring infographic starts with boring data… it’s simple, but we obviously need the data. So you need to find a GREAT story to tell, use overwhelming percentages or fun data to back up your story. Once your familiar with the data, it won’t be that complicated to find a good way to tell it.

3. Identify possible barriers

Once the story’s alive, you need to double check with the data and the reality. This might seem obvious, but most of the time, this step gets ignored. Sometimes you’ll find yourself tempted to do some “data cooking”, which means using the data that serves you and forgetting about the rest, please don’t do this, your audience will appreciate you telling them straight facts, and hey, nothing’s perfect, so tell the truth!

 4. Create a hierarchy

You need to organize the priorities. Find that “hero” that drives the entire story: that fact, or object will be the main priority and will allow you to organize the rest of the data around it. This is the step where you’ll start seeing the final product coming to life.

5. Build a wireframe

The wireframe represents something like a support stage, we mean a solid structure, which will come up with the data refining, select the most important facts and organize them following our hierarchy. In this step we need to start creating the visual part of the infographic.

6. Choose a format

How should we present our info? Certainly, the traditional approach is bars, circles and lines… but the sky is the limit. Here’s where you need to put that creative mind to work. And with Visme.com’s help, you’ll see how easy it is to be an artist!

 7. Check, check, check!

In this step, you should already have a beautiful infographic, full of relevant data. So what’s next? Well, you need to triple check and make completely sure everything’s correct! It’s a good time to see the data again, and check every source.
